Joel Bein,

artistic director

Joel Bein is Artistic Director and conductor of the New Orleans Chamber Players, whom he lead in Igor Stravinsky’s Octet for Wind Instruments at the organization’s 2018 debut concert. Recent NOCP programming under Bein’s curation include composer’s Jean Francaix, György Ligeti, Jonathan Dove, Michael Torke, Kenji Bunch, Ludwig Thuille, and Missy Mazzoli.

Bein holds an MM in Wind Conducting from the University of Michigan, where he conducted the renowned Michigan Symphony Band, and a BME from The Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam. His work with the wind musicians at Michigan awarded him a ranking of Finalist for the 2017 American Prize in Wind Ensemble Conducting, as well as semi-finalist for the 2017 Young Conductor Mentor Project. He lead works from CPE Bach to Sarah Kirkland Snider to the premiere of Flying Fire by Shu Zhou. With the Symphony Band, he served as a production assistant on the CDs Reflections and Poetics, featuring composer Michael Daugherty, soprano Hila Plitmann, and tubist Carol Jantsch.

Previously, he worked in Santa Fe, New Mexico where he was Conductor of the Santa Fe Youth Symphony Orchestra and Assistant Conductor of the High Desert Winds, facilitating collaborations with Guillermo Figueroa, the Albuquerque Youth Orchestra, and the Colorado Springs Youth Symphony.

Bein’s principal conducting teachers are Michael Haithcock and Brian K. Doyle, with additional study in symposia from H. Robert Reynolds, Mallory Thompson, Craig Kirchhoff, Mark Scatterday, Steven Davis, Donald Schleicher, and Marin Alsop at the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music.

Joel is dedicated to healthy living, self-driven education, and cultivating the entrepreneurial mindset.
